Oghma is the god of knowledge, inspiration, and invention — the deity of all information, whether written, spoken, or discovered. He believes knowledge itself is neutral and that its value lies in being found, shared, and used. He is the patron of bards, sages, historians, and inventors alike. Oghma is depicted as a handsome, bearded man of middle age carrying a scroll, radiating an air of calm wisdom and curiosity.

He values the free exchange of information above almost all else and is deeply opposed to the suppression or deliberate distortion of knowledge. He is not aligned with good or evil — truth is truth regardless of its consequences — which sometimes puts him at odds with deities who prefer comfortable lies to uncomfortable facts.

Followers

Oghma attracts scholars, bards, sages, scribes, historians, and inventors. His followers believe knowledge should be sought, preserved, and shared freely. His clergy maintain libraries, copy texts, interview sages, and travel to record history as it happens. They tend to be intellectually voracious, sometimes frustratingly objective, and occasionally so devoted to preserving all knowledge that they struggle to make moral judgments about what they document. Suppressing or destroying knowledge is among the worst sins in his faith.

Divine Relationships

Oghma is served by several lesser deities including Deneir (writing and literature) and Milil (poetry and song), who function almost as aspects of his portfolio. He has a respectful relationship with Mystra, as magic and knowledge are deeply intertwined. He opposes Cyric and Shar, both of whom deal in deception and the suppression of truth — anathema to everything Oghma stands for.
