Deneir is the god of writing, literature, and the preservation of knowledge through the written word. He is considered a servant or lesser aspect of Oghma, dedicated specifically to the written form that knowledge takes. He is depicted as a thin, meticulous scholar with ink-stained fingers and an expression of intense concentration.
Deneir believes that the written word is sacred — that to commit knowledge to writing is an act of devotion, and that the destruction of written works is among the greatest of sins. He is the patron of all who work with letters and images, from illuminators to mapmakers to common scribes.
Followers
Deneir’s followers are scribes, illuminators, cartographers, librarians, and anyone who works with the written word professionally or devoutly. His clergy maintain scriptoriums and libraries and are expected to be literate in multiple languages. They copy books, preserve records, and work to spread literacy. They tend to be meticulous, patient, and sometimes so focused on the form of writing that they lose sight of its content.
Divine Relationships
Deneir serves Oghma as a lesser deity within his portfolio. He is allied with Milil (poetry) and Gond (invention), both of whom share his investment in the transmission of knowledge and creativity. He opposes Cyric and Shar, who deal in deception and the suppression of truth.
