Kelemvor is the god of the dead — not of death itself, but of the passage from life and the stewardship of those who have passed on. He is a former mortal who ascended to godhood and brings a mortal’s perspective to his divine role. Where previous gods of death were cruel, indifferent, or corrupt, Kelemvor strives to be fair and just. He ensures every soul reaches its proper place in the afterlife and despises anything that interferes with that process.

He is stern but not cruel, and views undeath as among the most serious of violations — an interruption of the natural order that he takes personally. He has no interest in death for its own sake and does not encourage killing; he simply ensures that those who have died are treated with dignity and guided appropriately.

Followers

Kelemvor’s followers include gravediggers, morticians, those who tend to the dying, and paladins who hunt the undead. His clergy perform funeral rites, maintain graveyards, and actively combat necromancers and undead wherever they are found. They are solemn, practical, and compassionate in a quiet way — they deal with grief constantly and have developed a calm acceptance of mortality that can seem cold to outsiders but is genuinely meant to comfort. They do not mourn death but honor it.

Divine Relationships

Kelemvor inherited much of his portfolio from Myrkul, the previous god of the dead, and works to undo much of the corruption Myrkul left behind. He is on reasonable terms with Tyr and the Triad, sharing their lawful alignment and investment in proper order. He is deeply hostile to Bhaal, Myrkul, and Cyric — the latter of whom once held his portfolio before Kelemvor wrested it away. He also opposes Lolth and any deity who creates or encourages undead.
