Sylvandar — Capital of the Elven Republic

Population: 270,000 (70% elvish; non-elven populations concentrated primarily in lower districts and outer wards)

Sylvandar rises from the heart of the ancient forest around the sacred Woaden Trees — colossal living pillars found nowhere else in Eryndor. Some tower more than three thousand feet into the sky, with roots so vast that whole avenues, halls, and foundations have been built over and among them. Many structures cling to the great trunks themselves, fitted carefully into the living wood. Druidic magic and ancient rituals have preserved the trees for generations, but the knowledge of how to grow new Woaden Trees has been lost. Because of this, they are more than landmarks — they are relics, sanctuaries, and the irreplaceable heart of Sylvandar’s identity.

Though outsiders often imagine Sylvandar as a city suspended entirely within the canopy, much of its daily life unfolds across the forest floor and the immense lower trunks of the Woaden groves. Markets, artisan halls, civic districts, and broad white-stone walkways spread beneath the trees in carefully harmonized layers of architecture and living nature. Above them, the great branches hold the true heart of power — noble estates, elevated sanctuaries, ancient forums, and arcane towers rising through the canopy like hanging kingdoms suspended in emerald light.

The city is a seamless blend of nature, arcana, and artistry. Bridges of living wood and luminous stone weave between elevated terraces while enchanted lanterns drift beneath the canopy like captive stars. Waterfalls descend through the roots of ancient groves into mist-veiled gardens below, and nearly every structure bears signs of careful magical shaping rather than conventional construction. To the elves of Sylvandar, beauty is not decoration, but evidence of wisdom, discipline, and cultural refinement.

Sylvandar serves as both the political and spiritual center of the Republic. Primarily inhabited by High Elves and Wood Elves, though all elven peoples maintain some presence within its districts. The Woaden Trees themselves are protected by ancient law, and any deliberate harm done to them is considered among the gravest crimes in the Republic — enforcement falls to the Woaden Rangers.

Districts

The Crownlimbs

The highest and oldest district of Sylvandar, suspended among the lowest branches of the Woaden Trees. Houses the Vita Forum, the royal estate of House Vaelith, the ancestral manors of the Eterna Voca, and many of the Republic’s most ancient political institutions. Elegant bridges and elevated terraces shimmer beneath layered protective enchantments, while living bark walls are engraved with centuries of Senate history, treaties, and arcane memorials.

Whispergrove

The cultural and spiritual heart of the Republic. Contains open-air temples to Corellon, illusion theaters, sculpture gardens, moonlit reflecting pools, and song galleries woven between softly illuminated groves. Revered as a place of contemplation and artistic expression, the district draws philosophers, priests, musicians, and diplomats seeking quiet clarity beneath the canopy.

Verdant Reach

Sylvandar’s foremost academic and arcane district. Home to enchanted schools, alchemical markets, botanical conservatories, spell-ink foundries, and civic archives devoted to magical study. Here, herbalism is taught beside enchantment, and magical craftsmanship is treated with the same reverence as fine artistry. Scholars from across the Republic study beneath the Reach’s glowing towers and living lecture halls.

The Barkline

The broad lower district, spread across the forest floor beneath the Woaden canopy, winding around the immense trunks and roots of the sacred groves. Serves as the commercial and civic foundation of the capital — home to tradespeople, artisans, civic workers, merchants, and much of the city’s middle class. Its markets, workshops, plazas, and busy thoroughfares make it far louder and more grounded than the elevated serenity of the Crownlimbs. The pulse of ordinary life within the Republic is most clearly felt here.

Notable Figures

King Aelar Vaelith A serene, white-haired monarch robed in radiant blue and silver. Though he rarely intervenes directly in politics, his presence remains a powerful symbol of elven continuity and national unity.

First Arbiter Selura Duskweave A brilliant enchantress and political strategist known for her perfect memory and the floating crystal quill that records her every spoken word. As presiding authority over the Senate of Sixteen, Selura has maintained the Republic’s fragile political balance for nearly a century.

Captain Ayren Thornleaf Commander of the legendary Woaden Rangers and one of the most respected figures in Sylvandar. Clad in bark-forged armor and rarely speaking beyond necessity, Ayren is said to know every sacred grove within the Republic by memory. Stories claim he once slew a corrupted treant with a single arrow.

High Sage Elran Mistelis Head of the Arcane Conclave within Verdant Reach and among the oldest living elves in the Republic. Revered as both scholar and historian, often described as a living archive of Sylvandar’s arcane and political memory.

Senator Thalen Duskbranch (Vita Populi) A populist senator drawn from the Barkline and one of the strongest voices for traditionalist isolationism within the Vita Forum. Speaks in blunt contrast to the polished aristocracy of the upper districts and commands considerable support among working-class citizens of the capital.
