Auril is the goddess of winter, cold, and ice — a beautiful and terrible deity who embodies the lethal indifference of the frozen north. She is not merely the deity of winter weather; she is the divine will behind the killing cold, the blizzard that buries entire villages, and the long winter that starves what the frost does not freeze. She is vain, cold-hearted, and deeply envious of the warmth and life she is not permitted to experience herself.

Auril is considered a minor deity by most of the divine order but commands significant fear in northern regions where her power is most directly felt. She has been known to extend winters catastrophically when she feels slighted or seeks to punish communities that did not honor her sufficiently.

Followers

Auril is worshipped primarily in northern regions where winter is a genuine survival threat. Her followers are a mixture of those who genuinely revere her terrible beauty and those who fear that failing to worship her will bring her wrath upon their community. Her clergy conduct rituals to appease her, particularly at the start of winter, and sometimes make significant sacrifices to convince her to release her grip in spring. Followers tend to be hardy, fatalistic, and comfortable with cold in ways that unsettle southerners.

Divine Relationships

Auril opposes Lathander most directly, as the Morninglord’s spring and dawn are her defeat personified. She also clashes with Chauntea, whose crops she destroys, and Mielikki, whose forests she kills. She has a complicated relationship with Talos — both are destructive weather deities, but Talos’s storms are hot and violent where Auril’s power is cold and silent.
