The Vanguard is a lawfully chartered martial guild that operates in Varondale, known as Champions of Justice and Protectors of the Innocent. Functionally they guard the trade hub of Hearthpoint, serving as an independent defense against piracy and raiders outside of crown authority.
The Vanguard protects the human trade lanes, guarding coastal routes, river traffic, merchant roads, and the cargo fleets that keep Kastalshire moving. Their shield-over-sail symbol has become a welcome sight to merchants who can afford them. A Vanguard contract is expensive, but so is losing a ship full of grain, coin, or noble passengers.
