Umberlee is the goddess of the sea — specifically its dangerous, uncontrollable, and merciless aspects. She is the patron of everything that makes the ocean deadly: storms at sea, unexpected currents, sea monsters, and the simple indifference of the deep water to those who drown in it. She is capricious, cruel, and impossible to fully appease — offerings to Umberlee are made out of fear, not love.
She is not entirely without honor — she respects those who face the sea honestly and acknowledge its power. What she despises is the arrogance of those who believe they have mastered the ocean, for no mortal ever truly does.
Followers
Umberlee is not truly loved by anyone — she is propitiated out of necessity. Sailors, fishermen, and coastal communities make offerings to her before voyages, not in worship but in bribery. Her actual clergy are relatively rare and tend to be those who have survived something terrible at sea and emerged with a dark reverence for the power that almost killed them. They are unpredictable, demanding, and deeply fatalistic.
Divine Relationships
Umberlee has few true allies — she is too capricious and demanding for long-term divine relationships. She has a tense rivalry with Talos, as both claim dominion over storm and destruction. She opposes Selûne, whose moonlight guides sailors that Umberlee would prefer lost. Valkur, a lesser deity of sailors, is her direct enemy, as he protects those she seeks to claim.
