The Ekhara

“The Crater of Fading Light”

The Ekhara is a colossal crater, miles wide and ancient beyond memory. Blackened cliffs and twisted, fused stone surround the scar. No expedition has ever returned with a complete map. Every journey into the depths is a gamble against madness, collapse, and disappearance into the dark.

Surface Features

Jagged cliffs encircle the crater, strangely absent of any shard deposits. Mining expeditions have returned either empty-handed or not at all.

At the crater’s heart lies a vast, gaping sinkhole that descends deeper than any known cavern in Eryndor. Beneath it lies a sprawling, unstable network of tunnels and caverns that constantly shifts due to earthquakes, making mapping nearly impossible.

Climate

The Ekhara is unnaturally still — no wind enters the basin. The sky above often shimmers with strange light, like a heatwave mirage, visible even during the day.

Fading Magic

The deeper one descends into the Ekhara, the weaker magic becomes.

DepthEffect
Upper LevelsSpells flicker; casting often requires multiple attempts
Middle DepthsSpells lose potency; effects are halved or shortened
Deep CavernsMagic ceases entirely — no spells, enchantments, or magical items function

Arcane Erosion

Prolonged time underground frays a caster’s connection to magic. Even after escaping, the effects linger, leaving permanent damage to one’s ability to channel power.

Cultural and Exploration Notes

No Permanent Settlements

No village, outpost, or guild has survived attempting to settle the Ekhara’s rim or depths. Environmental instability, cave collapses, and magical failure destroy any construction.

Exploration

Expeditions enter the crater drawn by rumors of alien metals, ancient relics, and lost truths. None have returned with a complete map. Expeditions vanish, lose their way, or are destroyed by sudden cave-ins.
