Azurath

Azurath stands at the mouth of the Blackrun River where dark water empties into the Ice Sea. The city rises from black coastal stone, its walls facing the wind like the prow of a ship. Fog rolls in from the water most mornings, thick enough to swallow towers and dull the sound of bells. The city was built to endure.

South of the city, the Blackrun River widens into Blackrun Lake, where barges gather before continuing inland. Azurath lives under pressure from every direction: the Redmarch Coalition threatens from the east, Thundrakar looms to the northwest, and the sea itself becomes an enemy in winter.

Districts & Forts

Coldwater Harbor — The oldest and loudest part of the city. Stone piers, patrol slips, ropewalks, fish sheds, and frost-black warehouses.

The Rivergate — Controls passage from the sea into the protected southern waterway. Twin towers linked by heavy chain booms that rise from the water during attack.

The Lakeward Yards — South of the city where the Blackrun broadens into the lake. Damaged patrol boats repaired, barges loaded for inland roads.

The Eastwatch — Faces the Redmarch frontier. Buildings squat, severe, and built for speed of response. Where captured raiders, deserters, and spies are taken.

The Blackpine Ward — Working district of dark timber homes and practical people. Children learn trail signs early.

The Stonecut Rise — Climbs into the eastern ridges where the mining roads begin. Ore dust stains the walls; kobold engineers move through with lamps and measuring rods.

The Lantern Roads — Restless heart of Azurath’s frontier trade. Iron lanterns burn through fog and snow, lighting inns, guide houses, contract halls, and weapons shops.

Frostchain Hold — Watches the western sea road. (Captain Rhyxara Coldscale)

Fort Mammoth’s Grave — Northwestern approach toward Thundrakar. (Marshal Korvath Hailborn)

Ironfang Redoubt — Faces the most direct Redmarch road. (Commander Voskarn Emberjaw)

Ashknife Fort — Half-hidden among broken hills and pine. (Captain Sareth Veyr)

Leadership

Scale Bearer Azran Veyrusk — Dark blue dragonborn veteran with frost scars across his jaw and one horn broken near the base. More comfortable on a harbor wall than in a council chamber.

Harbor-Marshal Vashara Coldwake — Commands the harbor and fleet. Bronze-scaled, sharp-eyed, walks with a limp from an old attack at sea.

Tikkit Redledger — Kobold overseer of the Rivergate ledgers and city supply flow. Small, red-scaled, and famously unpleasant. Has exposed more criminals with arithmetic than most marshals have with swords.

Marshal Ygrax Stonebreath — Commands the Eastwatch. Gray-scaled, severe, feared by her own soldiers.

Sivra Blackpine — Leads many Ashen Antler patrols. Lean, quiet, more at ease beneath trees than beneath banners.

Grannik Three-Tusks — Licensed frontier broker on the Lantern Roads. Half-goliath, half-orc, broad as a door, usually smiling like he knows who will die next.
